Araminta de Clermont is a British born photographer currently living in Cape Town.

Her work explores rites of passage, and the visual currencies of group identification and formation such as gang structures.

The first exhibition she did back in 2006, called Life After was based on Cape Town notorious prison gang, The Numbers Gang and their hardcore tatoo culture...

There is an Jamaican artist I've always respected, he has a killer flow, mad lyrics, he is always bringing new vibes to the Dancehall scene and goes by the name of BUSY SIGNAL.

He had is first success with the single STEP OUT on the Slingshot Riddim back in 2005 (for the little strory, we were the first Swiss Sound System to play it on Dubplate).

Since then he has been very productive, giving us big hits after big hits, working with the best Deejays and producer from Jamaica.

Not so long ago he voiced a track called DA STYLE DEH, which was remixed by DOUSTER and more, most recently he has been working with M.I.A and Major Lazer and just released this cool track called JAFRICAN THING, new remix coming soon?

So I thought it would be a good idea to introduce to you VAMPIRE WEEKEND, if you don't know them yet.

VAMPIRE WEEKEND is a New Yorker band formed in 2006, they're doing a sort of soft Indie Punk Rock mixed up with Africans sounds, the result is pretty fresh and perfect to chill by the beach (can't wait for this summer). Their first opus came out in 2008 and they just released a new one, called Contra, few weeks ago.

Here is one of the song I like on their first album, It's called Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa, and I wasn't surprised to discover that THE VERY BEST remixed it.

For the first volume, I decided to go deep in the New House, Less Is More style, keeping a little tropical touch of course...

PARA LOS PIBES

Today I'm going to introduce you to a pretty unknown style of music called CUMBIA VILLERA... I noticed that Cumbia was getting pretty hype in the Ghetto Tech scene trough Djs and producers like Toy Selecta from the Mad Decent crew.

Cumbia was born in Colombia when African slaves started to mix up their music with Amerindians music, this new kind of sounds started to get very popular down there and quickly invade in the whole South America and further up in Panama and Mexico...

When it reached in Argentina, they started to play it with their own style and it became the gangster music in the slums of Buenos Aires also called VILLA. Bands such as Los Pibes Chorros (kids thieves), Yerba Brava (tough weed) and Damas Gratis (ladies free) started to represent those ghettos and sing about drugs and violent lyrics like that...

Damas Gratis are, in my opinion, the best representents of this movement, with their leader Pablo Lescano, who is considered by many as the father of Cumbia Villera.

Damas Gratis live in Buenos Aires...

Some TV Channels in Buenos Aires only show Cumbia concerts all day long, so gangster!

In Switzerland it's not a big surprise seeing somebody walking his dog in the streets... In Lagos, Nigeria some people rather walk their Hyena than their dog. Can you imagine that? Walking a Hyena!

Pieter Hugo, very talented Southa Afrikan photographer, share the life of this people and their hyena and the result is just amazing (read the full story here)

He made an exhibition with all this pictures called The Hyena and Other Men and I'm quiet shure that I already saw a book of this pictures too.

Rainbow Arabia is an electronic duo from Los Angeles consisting of Futur Pigeon and Whisky Bread (Danny Preston and his wife, Tiffany)

They perform a sort of Dance music influenced by Arabic, North African and Asian Sounds. They released their first Ep, The Basta in 2008

and the second one Kabukimono not so long ago...

This second EP features their wicked song Holidays in Congo, which was remixed by Myd and trust me its a banger.

FUNANA TO WARM UP THESE FREEZING DAYS

It's getting very cold out there and it's getting harder and harder for me to get out of my bed in the morning. Thanks to my wife, I found the key to my problem, I just listen to some FUNANA to warm up my days... You're supposed to ask yourself what the fuck I'm talking about hum? FUNANA? What's that?

The Funana is a music and dance genre from Cape Verde. Funana is an accordion-based music. It is perhaps the most upbeat form of Cape Verdean music and bears a resemblance to American zydeco, while being less blues-based and maintaining a closer connection with West African music. The rhythm is usually provided by the ferrinho a sort of metal bar beaten very fast...

Nowadays, the typical instruments used to play Funana are replaced by Synths and the result is pretty wicked... Here is one example of this dope "New Funana".

In Caribbean countries, the spirits or ghosts are taking a huge place in the society...
These spirits are feared and respected and people get in contact with them trough ancestral ceremonies such as Voodoo in Haiti, Senterria in Cuba or Obeah in Jamaica...
In Montserrat, a small island of the Caribbean, these spirits are called JUMBIES, So is called my friend WILDLIFE! new EP.

WILDLIFE! aka Samuel Riot has been active on the Swiss Reggae scene for years, working on the well known vibes machine, Goldrush Sound. He started his own career few years ago, mixing his first love, Reggae music, with electronic sounds.

After spreading his name in Switzerland with his wicked dances SAFARI, working on Terry Lynn's album KINGSTONLOGIC and remixing songs for Radioclit, Ghislain Poirier and The Dø, WILDLIFE! just released is first EP, JUMBIE...

Combining influences from funk, reggae, disco, 80's electropop and traditional African melody, South Afrikan group GAZELLE was born in 2006 following a long journey of discovery in music. Xander Ferreira, the founding member, started his career as a reggae singer known as the White Lion. Originally from a remote part of South Africa, close the border of Mozambique, he grew up being a part of authentic South African culture in confusing but colorful times. Gazelle had it's breath of life when Xander started experimenting with producing a mixture of organic and electronic music. Mixing an element of Reggae Dub and Electro something fresh was found.

Joining forces with music producer Nick Matthews, dj extraordinare Gazelle became a powerful production duo. With a flair for live performance Nick spent the last six years as a professional DJ and producer collaborating with some of South Africas finest musical talent. His focus has been to blend and create diverse sonic mixtures using the latest in modern DJ techniques. Nick's productions include the likes of electro funk outfit Iridium Project and the afro fusion band Coda. At the beginning of 2005 after hearing some of Xander's initial compositions Nick was compelled to help produce the work for the project and the first steps to a new journey began. Together the production duo combined an interesting mixture of backgrounds to create the unique sound of Gazelle...

Their upcoming album "CHIC AFRIQUE" featuring the single "Die Verlore Seun" is a bomb...
